JSO Announces the Winner of the 2012 International Young Artists Competition and Upcoming Featured Performances
GOLDEN – The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce Blake Pouliot, violinist, as the 2012 International Young Artists Competition (IYAC) winner. The all-day competition took place at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, event co-sponsor, on January 7, Blake offered a stunning performance of the challenging Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. As this year’s winner, Blake receives $2,000 in cash, a five-year annuity of $1,000 per year starting in 2013 and performances as soloist in a fundraising recital on March 24 as well as soloist in concert with the JSO on March 25.

Just 17 years old, Blake is a currently a high school senior in Toronto, Canada. He began violin and piano lessons at the age of six. With his perfect pitch, his technique on both instruments developed quickly. He has received many awards and made his concerto debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra when he was 11 years old. He was one of only nine young violinists from Europe and North America invited to participate in a violin symposium at The Julliard School of Music in New York under the aegis of Brian Lewis and Itzak Perlman. He has also studied in master classes with many internationally known musicians including Pinchas Zukerman, Yo Yo Ma, James Ehnes, and Leila Josefowicz. His principal teachers have been Marie Berard, concertmaster of the Canadian Opera Company, and Erika Raum of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. |

Second place winner Sora Tsuchiya, violinist, recent graduate of Pleasant Hill Academy in Longmont, CO, starts college at Waseda University in Tokyo in April. In this competition, he offered a passionate performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47. Sora is currently the youngest member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland and has received numerous awards in music competitions over the past several years. As the IYAC second place winner, Sora receives $1,500 cash. |

Our third place winner, Francesco Camuglia, flutist, gave a beautiful performance of Mozart’s Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Orchestra in G Major, K. 313. At 21 years old, Francesco is a senior at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music (Los Angeles). He is an active performer with various symphony orchestras including the Colburn Orchestra, Boise Philharmonic, American Youth Symphony and Las Vegas Philharmonic. As the IYAC third place winner, Francesco receives $1,000 cash. |

A special solo recital will be given by winner Blake Pouliot on March 24, 2012 at 6:00pm at a private home in the Morrison area. This intimate concert will showcase Blake’s exceptional talents and is a fundraising event for the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition. Tickets are $50 and include wine, heavy hors d’oeuvres, dessert and the solo recital featuring music of the artist’s choice. The Shostakovich Violin Concerto, a composition which ranges from deep emotional melodies to powerful virtuoso violin playing, is perfectly suited for Blake Pouliot’s passionate and exciting performing style. The JSO will also be performing Sibelius’ Symphony No. 6 which is widely considered Sibelius’ most under-rated symphony. Its masterful blend of pastoral and dramatic themes has made it a favorite among classical music aficionados.
Concerts are held at the Green Center, Colorado School of Mines Campus, 924 16th Street, Golden, CO on Sundays at 3p.m.

Individual concert ticket prices are Adults $22; Seniors (62+) $17; College Student $12; Student (13-17 yrs old) $11, Children (5-12yrs old) $8; Children under 5 are free. Group rates are available for 10 or more.
The Jefferson Symphony is a nonprofit organization composed of 75 dedicated and gifted musicians. Donations and ticket purchases help support the classical season concerts, the International Young Artists Competition held at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities January 7, 2012, and free summer concerts in Jefferson County parks.
